Current Affairs (Term 2 Wk 2)

Q; Do you agree that since a professional sports career is short-lived, you should not go into one?

Personally, I feel that a professional sports career is not short-lived. A sports career can probably last us about 8 years if we turn professional at the age of 22. And after these 8 years, we can still continue to play exhibition matches. For example, tennis, Pet Sampras, he has played professional and in cups for quite a number of years, despite him now being rather old, he still plays exhibition matches and still can earn millions for that one exhibition match. Further more, if you are good in a certain sports career, even if it is short-lived, you are most probably rich enough to support yourself for the rest of your life as the competition rewards or salary are probably very high during the days of a professional sports man/woman.

Now, if a sports career is short-lived due to age factor, it is still not a bad thing to do into one as maybe after resigning from being a professional player, you can still be a coach which will still earn a rather steady income. Adding to that, knowing that you have once been a professional player, you can charge higher rates for each coaching session, which will earn quite a bit of money too.

However, there are bad sides of becoming a professional player. Firstly, it is very difficult to become a professional player. And even after becoming a professional one, you will have to train very hard which means that it will take up a lot of time. And it also means that once you get any injury, you are unable to get another job quickly as too much time in the past have been spent on training and taking a job which requires brain would be hard to find.

Becoming a professional sports player would also mean becoming rather popular.

In conclusion, I find that it really depends on whether you have the interest in that sport or not. If you do, why not give it a try?
